    DOT SAP Evaluations

As a certified DOT Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), we provide comprehensive and specialized evaluations to assess an employee’s readiness to return to safety-sensitive duties following a violation of the Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol regulations. Our evaluations include a thorough review of the individual’s substance use history, treatment progress, and compliance with mandated education or treatment programs.

We take a detailed and personalized approach to ensure the individual has successfully fulfilled the necessary steps and is prepared to resume safety-sensitive responsibilities. Our recommendations prioritize workplace safety and help organizations maintain DOT regulatory compliance while supporting employees in their recovery journey.

What to Expect From Your Initial SAP Evaluation

The initial SAP evaluation is a critical first step in the DOT return-to-duty process. Here’s what you can expect:

    1. Scheduling Your Appointment
Start by finding a SAP near you and setting up an appointment.
    2. Completing Paperwork
At your appointment, you will fill out forms detailing your health history, substance use history, and other relevant information.
    3. Face-to-Face Evaluation
During the evaluation, your SAP will:
    • Assess the nature and extent of your substance use.
    • Determine your risk for future substance use.
    • Recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
    • Send a report to your employer regarding your status and treatment plan.

Your SAP will work to connect you with resources that are local and aligned with your budget.

    Completing Your Treatment Plan

After your initial evaluation, you must complete the treatment plan recommended by your SAP. Treatment plans typically consist of two key components:

    1. Direct Recovery Work
This involves programs tailored to the nature and severity of your substance use, such as counseling, inpatient or outpatient rehab, or support groups.
    2. Educational Programs
These may include online or in-person courses focused on the dangers of substance use and its impact on safety.

When Can You Return to Duty?

After completing your treatment plan, you will meet with your SAP for a follow-up evaluation. At this point, your SAP will determine:

    • If you successfully completed the treatment plan.
    • Whether you are ready to return to safety-sensitive duties.

If your SAP deems the treatment successful, they will notify your employer, and you can resume work. If the treatment was not successful, additional recommendations will be made.
Even after returning to work, ongoing treatment may be required, and you should expect regular DOT drug and alcohol testing for 6 to 12 months.
